I've been a professional writer for 20 years.

When I went to school, nobody told me there was such a job. I would have paid much more attention in English classes if I'd understood that you could indeed derive a livelihood from learning about things and putting words together.

The great thing about being a writer is that you have professional license to explore topics that are interesting to you, no matter how arcane or offbeat they may be. The very first story I wrote for money was about Major Matt Mason, a toy I loved as a kid. My quest to find out what happened to the original King Kong stop motion puppet led me to Bob Burns and, eventually, the IT CAME FROM BOB'S BASEMENT project.

I'm still a hunt-and-peck typist, however.
