"A treasure trove of movie magic! I never get tired of looking at Bob's collection--in person or in the pages of this book. Best of all, Bob's infectious enthusiasm for the horror, fantasy, and sci-fi genres comes through on every page."
- LEONARD MALTIN

In a world cursed with irony, it's great to be able to look at something and exclaim, "COOOOOL!"

"Burns gives us a guided tour of his treasures - - and also, along the way, a light-hearted autobiography ... He's a storehouse of movie lore... Grade: 'A'"

- SCI FI: THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF THE SCI-FI CHANNEL, April 2001

"'BOB'S BASEMENT' reads like an extraterrestrial love letter to a simpler time, when aliens walked the earth sans CGI card."

- GEAR magazine, March 2001

The idea was simple - -
create a way in which a treasured icon from our childhood could sneak back into our lives. I conceived the MASTERPIECE EDITION as a "brown paper bag" for guys who needed to justify the expense of reacquiring the best toy ever made. ("But honey, this is a BOOK that just happens to have a helpful visual aid attached...")

BEHIND THE SCENES:

The strange and unusual story of the creation, development and marketing of the MASTERPIECE EDITION in words and pictures. (Strange but true: NORMAN MAILER will eventually make a brief appearance. Honest.)

Then there was a lawsuit I had to file, but that's a different story that'll be told sometime in the future.

There is a useful Lesson, though: Do a background check on anyone you plan to do business with, no matter how financially solvent he or she pretends to be (there are any number of services available online that will do the job for $40-$60 per search. I used KNOWX.COM after I'd already been fooled, unfortunately).

Look for liens, bad credit, and other encumberances that may be attached to the person's name or their business name.

I ended up in line to collect the money owed me after my former associate's lawyer finally admitted in court, "Your honor, my client does not have the money to pay Mr. Michlig." They offered me a mortgage on the guy's house - - and it wasn't the first mortgage, either.

But, again, that's a different story ...

Almost forgotten in the mists of time is the fact that the classic RKO film King Kong was in large part based on real events. I've been working with filmmaker James Mansfield on a companion book to his new documentary, based on a recently unearthed cache of extraordinary footage and documentation.

I can say no more at this time except that this project will shock and amaze ...

The blog tracks my work on a book designed to use my city of Franklin, Wisconsin as an example of the community planning process in modern American cities and towns around the country. As the title implies, there will be a certain bias against the sort of unchecked, freeway-fed expansion that the United States has seen since the end of World War II.

TRAVOLTA KONG vs. ELVIS KONG: Part 1 of my investigation into the 1976 Paramount remake of Kong. We begin with a look at the famous teaser poster by John Berkey, which, sadly, has become a reminder of what once was before September 11, 2001.

"No one cry when Jaws die. But when the monkey die, people gonna cry. Intellectuals gonna love Konk; even film buffs who love the first Konk gonna love ours. Why? Because I give them no crap. I no spend two, three million to do quick business. I spend 24 million on my Konk. I give them quality.
I got here a great love story, a great adventure.
And she rated PG. For everybody."
